Still a way to go on North Korea: Pompeo

  • Trump thanks North Korea’s Kim for returning war remains ‘I look forward to seeing you soon

"I mean it really is a fulfillment of the pledge that Chairman Kim made to President Trump in Singapore", he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump received a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un earlier this week.

Byrd told Pentagon reporters Thursday that along with the remains North Korea provided the identification "dog tag" of an American servicemember, typically a metal military identification worn around the neck.

The agency has DNA samples from 92 percent of the families of the almost 7,700 Americans still missing from the Korean War.

In a somber ceremony, 55 remains, who are believed to be American Korean War service members, were repatriated at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Wednesday afternoon. About 5,300 were lost in what is now North Korea.

When the North Koreans turned over the 55 boxes to Byrd and other USA officials at Wonsan on July 27 they said the cases contained remains of an undetermined number of Americans, but the only identification item provided was a single military dog tag, Byrd said.

The U.S. military sent 200 boxes to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea in anticipation of the latest transfer, but North Korea handed over only 55 boxes, McKeague said, explaining that U.S. officials didn't know the specifics in advance.

EDaily reported the top USA envoy to Seoul said that hasty measures are not the answer.

But a document signed by Kim and Trump did not include details of how and when North Korea would denuclearize.

Still, the initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", Byrd said.

Flag draped transfer cases with the remains of American soldiers repatriated from North Korea are seen during a repatriation ceremony after arriving at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 2018.

In an illustration of how long it can take to identify Korean War remains, McKeague's agency announced today that the remains of a soldier found more than a decade ago, Army Sgt. William A. Larkins, of Pittsburgh, are being returned to his family for burial.

Pence also praised Trump for having the nation's fallen war heroes "on his heart" during his summit with Kim, which was focused on denuclearization of the Korea Peninsula.

"I think it's going to work out very well", he told supporters at a rally in Tampa, Florida, on Tuesday night.

The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that USA intelligence officials suspect North Korea is continuing to build new missiles in the same research facility that manufactured the country's ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.

If the United States and its allies move too quickly and make irreversible moves, then fail, such results will only benefit Kim Jong Un, Harris said.

But he declined to comment on intelligence about any other North Korean research activities when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

Friday's transfer of the remains on the Korean Peninsula coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice that ended fighting between North Korean and Chinese forces and South Korean and US -led forces under the U.N. Command.

The United States and North Korea conducted joint searches from 1996 until 2005, when Washington halted the operations, citing concerns about the safety of its personnel as Pyongyang stepped up its nuclear programme.
