Firefighters continue to battle California wildfires amid high winds

The fire has also razed 1,465 buildings, including some 1,000 homes, making it the sixth most destructive blaze in the history of the fire-prone western state. Brown said the trend would likely worsen if forecasts by climate scientists come to pass.

The request was made to Australia by the National Multi-Agency Coordination Group in the U.S., which is co-ordinating the efforts of several emergency response agencies, including the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

Six people, including two firefighters, have died, and the fire has destroyed 1,058 homes and almost 500 other buildings, including barns and warehouses, making it the sixth most destructive wildfire in California history, state fire officials said.

Tens of thousands of people across California are waiting to return home or assess what remains of their homes after the fires.

The Grass Valley Fire Department said Thursday a cat and chicken it rescued over the weekend are recovering from burns with the help of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"We're being surprised. Every year is teaching the fire authorities new lessons", Governor Jerry Brown told reporters. High temperatures, low humidity and afternoon winds along with low fuel moistures are aiding large fire growth, fire officials said.
