They were received by Vice President Mike Pence during a solemn ceremony in Hawaii.

The Sanumdong factory produced two Hwasong-15 ICBMs, North Korea's longest-range missiles, but the USA official noted that Pyongyang still had not tested a reliable re-entry vehicle capable of surviving a high-velocity trip through the Earth's atmosphere and delivering a nuclear warhead.

Pence, the son of a decorated Korean War veteran, called the returns a "historic occasion" and an accomplishment for President Donald Trump, "whose leadership and compassion brought this day about".

"But today, we prove these heroes were never forgotten". Mattis praised that North Korean returned the remains but said it is not a guarantee that the bones are American.

The solemn journey home for dozens of remains of USA and allied soldiers killed during the Korean War began early Wednesday with a repatriation ceremony at a warehouse inside the Osan Air Base in South Korea.

Other countries under the command of the United Nations also lost troops that are still unaccounted for, including the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada.

The bones' return was part of an agreement reached during a June summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Korean War remains were formally repatriated to USA soil Wednesday.

Experts say positively identifying the decades-old remains could take anywhere from days to decades.

North Korea provided only a single dog tag to help identify the 55 cases of remains that were given to United States officials on Friday, a U.S. defense official told CNN.

On Tuesday, North and South Korea held their second round of military talks since June, when the first such meeting took place at the border village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), where the two sides pledged to halt "all hostile acts".

North Korea has returned to the United States more than 55 sets of human remains. We have many others coming.

North Korea's intention was to deceive the U.S.by misconstruing the number of warheads as well as research facilities they have, while claiming they have fully denuclearised, the Post reported, citing intelligence.

The North Koreans provided enough specifics about where each suspected body was found that US officials have matched them to specific battles fought from 1950 to 1951, though not necessarily individuals, he said.

Adam Mount, a senior fellow and director at the Federation of American Scientists, agreed that these steps "are encouraging and helpful for extending talks" but noted they "are not themselves a major material step toward disarmament or militarily significant restrictions".

During the Singapore meeting, Kim also committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula while Trump promised to provide him with security assurances. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) examined the remains at the air base.

At a Senate hearing last week, Pompeo refuted claims that the USA was being played by North Korea.

An armistice that ended the Korean War has yet to be replaced with a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula in a technical state of war.

But Trump now faces criticism at home and elsewhere that North Korea hasn't taken any serious steps toward disarmament and may be trying to buy time to weaken worldwide sanctions against it.
