  • It could hit 48°C in Spain this week- Europe's hottest ever temperature

Europe is set to reach its hottest day ever as risky temperatures up to 48C are expected to hit Spain and Portugal this weekend.

Spain and Portugal faced another exceptionally hot day Saturday as a heat wave that has killed three people in Spain threatened to raise temperatures to record levels.

In neighboring Finland, a supermarket came up with a novel way of escaping the heat.

In addition to the heat, the wildfire danger will be extremely high in Spain and Portugal, as well as southern France, during the next few days. This level of alert considers the climate to be unsafe and potentially life threatening.

Records in several cities were broken on Saturday, but none reached the nationwide record of 47.3 C in the southern village of Amareleja in 2003.

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, temperatures are expected to peak at a toasty 36 degrees, which would be the hottest day Britain has felt for three years. The national record is 47.4C (117.3F).

MADRID: Europe sweltered through an intense heatwave on Sunday, with soaring temperatures contributing to forest fires, the closure of nuclear plants closing and even a threat to the Netherlands´ supply of potato fries, although some countries experienced a slight respite.

Portugal has issued red health alerts for extreme heat for more than half the country, with temperatures approaching 46 degrees yesterday.

Ipma, the Portuguese meteorological service, states that the period of "exceptional heat" is comparable to that of 2003, when there were some records.

Parts of the Iberian peninsula are bracing themselves for a surge in temperatures amid warnings of the first heatwave of the year. Scientists monitoring the decline say the glacier will lose its title of the highest point to the mountain's northern tip.

Norway's road service has asked motorists to watch out for reindeer and sheep that may be sheltering from the heat in tunnels.

The historic city of Evora, capital of Portugal's Alentejo region, reached 44.1 Celsius that day. Over 700 firefighters are battling a forest fire in the south of the country. In Sweden, there were also dozens of fires.

It led to widespread forest fire warnings and some surprisingly quiet tourism hot spots, as people heeded advice from forecasters and officials to stay out of the blazing sun.

Researchers said that climate change made Europe's extended heatwave twice as likely as it would otherwise have been.
