  • The plane crashed in a forest near Hergiswil

The Junkers Ju-52 plane went down on Saturday on the Piz Segnas mountain above the Swiss Alpine resort of Flims, striking the mountain's western flank about 2,540 metres (8,330 feet) above sea level.

"The JU-Air team is deeply saddened and thinks of the passengers, the crew and families and friends of the victims", the company said in a statement on its website.

Eleven men, nine women were killed, officials told Swiss news website 20min.ch.

The parents and two children crashed roughly 30 minutes after their plane took off from an airfield in Kägiswil, headed towards France, Swiss police said. Most were from Switzerland but also a couple and their son from Austria.

Daniel Knecht of the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board said the plane appears to have hit the ground near-vertically and at high speed.

Three Austrians and 17 Swiss were on board the trimotor JU-52 aircraft, built in the late 1930's as a military aircraft and later used to operate scenic and charter flights, when it crashed shortly before 5 p.m. (1500 GMT) on Saturday on the west side of the Piz Segnas mountain in the canton of Grissons.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Ju-Air said one of its aircraft had been involved in the accident on Saturday.

The area, which includes a glacier, is popular with hikers.

Collision with another aircraft and hitting an obstacle have been ruled out as a potential cause.

Chief executive and co-founder Kurt Waldmeier said the planes "are flown exclusively by very experienced professional pilots, and strictly checked and maintained by our own technicians".

Ju-Air offers "adventure flights" for people wanting to experience Switzerland's landscape from vintage planes.

Operator JU-Air has now suspended all flights until further notice.
