"It's a ridiculous amount of money", he said.

The head-to-head battle is scheduled to take place in November at Shadow Creek.

Laura Rutledge thinks it will be good for golf that Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are competing against each other in a one-on-one match.

The stakes will be high: The reported winner-take-all purse of $10 million would payout more than five times what Masters victor Patrick Reed received in April.

While the winner's purse still has not been finalized, previous reports on the much-anticipated match put the prize at $10 million.

Mickelson is now competing at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in Akron, Ohio where he fired an opening round of 4-under par 66.

Sports Illustrated reported that the match would likely be broadcast on pay-per-view television and, according to Mickelson, both players would be willing to wear microphones during the event.

The online bookmaker has Woods, a 14-time major champion, at $1.67 ahead of five-time major victor Mickelson ($2.10).

What followed was a much-hyped about pairing for the first two rounds at The Players in May, and it was there at TPC Sawgrass that Mickelson first floated the idea.

"I'm definitely not against that". Mickleson saying, "Now, I don't know if he wants a piece of me, but I just think it would be something that would be really fun". There's also no word on whether or not Tiger and Phil will be putting up any of their own money, which would obviously make the match more intriguing, or whether TV money earned from the event will go to charity.

Mickelson is attempting to play his way onto the US Ryder Cup team which will be named after next week's PGA Championship in what will be his 12th appearance.
