Thousands of people have been sleeping in makeshift shelters or out in the open. Many thousands more are temporarily displaced.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake measured magnitude 6-point-9.

The lush countryside of northern Lombok is pockmarked with collapsed homes and shops and damaged mosques.

"We can not evacuate all of them all at once because we don't have enough capacity on the boats".

The regency is home to tourist hot spots Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno.

"Whole villages were demolished, locals left homeless on the side of the roads".

"We went through the rubble and found water and bits and pieces and took it up on the hill where the locals were still hanging out", Mr Hulley said.

"No one has come, no doctor, no government official", she said.

Indonesian rescue workers were still struggling Tuesday to reach the northern part of Lombok island, which was struck by a major 6.9 magnitude quake Sunday.

There have been more than 130 aftershocks since the quake hit on Sunday morning and a tsunami warning was also issued - although this was lifted after a few hours. In several districts, more than half of homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Sarah Feeney, from Newport, and her boyfriend Adam Foley, from Dublin, were staying in Bali in Indonesia when two deadly earthquakes struck the neighbouring island of Lombok, causing major damage to Lombok, the Gili islands and Bali.

Officials say all the tourists on the Gili islands, off the coast of Lombok, have now been evacuated. Many got out but dozens were trapped, he said.

It's a much needed moment of respite for the family - Montgomery-Lay says they've been awake for nearly 60 hours since being evacuated from their hotel room Sunday night.

The military said five planes carrying food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers left the capital, Jakarta, for the island early on Wednesday.

Following the magnitude-7 quake in Lombok on Sunday, August 5, the West Nusa Tenggara tourist office post along with the Lombok tourist polytechnic team operated a food truck at the West Nusa Tenggara tourist offices.

Rescuers carry the body of an natural disaster victim recovered from the collapsed Jabal Nur mosque in North Lombok, Indonesia, Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018.

Following the quake, tourists crowded onto the beaches on Monday to await transport off the tropical destination.

"We have no information to suggest New Zealanders have been injured in the natural disaster at this stage. It's understandable they want to leave the Gilis, they are panicking", he told AFP.

Local authorities, worldwide NGOs and the central government have begun organising aid, but shattered roads have slowed efforts to reach survivors in the mountainous north and east of Lombok, which was hardest hit. We need to do it slowly because the trauma was extraordinarily bad.
