Twitter says it won't ban conspiracy theorist Alex Jones

  • Alex Jones and the rise of corporate censorship

A message Tuesday afternoon from Twitter Safety stated that "tweets from Alex Jones and InfoWars are not now in violation of our Rules".

"We know that's hard for many, but the reason is simple: he hasn't violated our rules". He may have escaped a ban for not violating Twitter's policies, but Dorsey says: "we'll enforce if he does".

Dorsey said Twitter would hold Jones to the same standard as it does every account. "We'll enforce if he does".

Further in Dorsey's thread, he said it was up to journalists to "document, validate, and refute" claims like Jones'.

"Twitter is reflective of real conversations happening in the world and that sometimes includes perspectives that may be offensive, controversial, and/or bigoted", she said.

Despite being banned by some tech companies and having his podcasts removed, the Infowars iPhone app became the fourth most popular news app in the App Store on Tuesday, according to screen grabs shared online. Jones, who was once described as a "performance artist" by his own lawyer, disputes that.

Dorsey was responding after Facebook, Apple, YouTube and Spotify took down material over the past week published by Jones, raising pressure on Twitter to do the same.

As BuzzFeed's Charlie Warzel points out, Jones does use Twitter differently to other social media sites, choosing to be less inflammatory.

In a statement, McAdams stated that he and Horton were suspended for defending the former USA diplomat Peter Van Buren, who was also banned from the platform following an argument with a man allegedly funded by socialist billionaire George Soros. A decision late Sunday by Apple to erase virtually all of Jones' podcasts from iTunes and its podcast apps set off a cascade.

His site Infowars has accused victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting of being "actors" in a plot to discredit the gun lobby.

"The war on your mind is in full swing as globalists remove outlets of liberty and truth, starting with the top of the speak: Alex Jones", a statement on his website read.

Dorsey's decision has not gone down well with some, however, with Reddit's former CEO suggesting it could lead to Twitter's demise.

The social media giant said: "We believe in giving people a voice, but we also want everyone using Facebook to feel safe".

"#Infowars has been banned on so many platforms, but people are still finding ways to get the truth", he added in subsequent tweet.
