"Vermonters are going to elect me on the platform". "It is the era of Trump, and I'm just not a Trump-like politician".

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Tina Smith, appointed this year to replace Al Franken after a sexual misconduct scandal, handily won her nomination Tuesday with more than 70 percent of the vote in the six-person field, which included former White House ethics counsel Richard Painter.

She easily won the Democratic primary to be the party's nominee for the state's fifth congressional district.

"The DNC is proud to congratulate Christine Hallquist, Vermont's Democratic nominee for governor and the country's first-ever openly transgender nominee for governor, along with all of tonight's Democratic nominees in the Green Mountain State". She spent 12 years at the Vermont Electric Cooperative before running for governor.

Hallquist won Tuesday's primary election by more than 20 points over her closest competitor and said she was "honored" to be her party's chosen nominee.

In another ground-breaking political moment, Somali-American state legislator Ilhan Omar claimed victory in her primary in Minnesota, putting her on track to become one of the first female Muslim members of the U.S. house of representatives.

"I want to thank those Republicans who have stuck with me through thick and thin and all those who have put aside partisanship to engage in the primary", Scott said. "Vermont has always been a leader in civil rights". We can be a beacon for the rest of the world'.

She will now face the incumbent Republican Governor Phil Scott in the general election in November.

Hallquist, a married grandmother who transitioned to a woman in December 2015, supports a '$15 minimum wage, overdose prevention sites, and paid family leave insurance, ' according to the Burlington Free Press.

"It is a year when women feel particularly enthusiastic about stepping into the public arena, and I think that's a good thing", Smith said.

She added: "Christine's business experience and progressive vision for Vermont means she's perfectly-positioned to take on Governor Scott - whose approval numbers continue to plunge because of his inability to manage the state government and his failed attempts to hide his conservative policy positions".

Scott will seek re-election in November by continuing his pledge to make the state more affordable, not raise taxes or fees, foster a better environment for businesses and attract newcomers to the state.

Hallquist defeated environmental activist James Ehlers; dance festival organizer Brenda Siegel; and 14-year-old student Ethan Sonneborn, on the ballot because a quirk in state law doesn't require candidates to be of voting age.
