Add California Wildfires as an interest to stay up to date on the latest California Wildfires news, video, and analysis from ABC News. The fire is burning near the Mendocino National Forest, about 140 miles northwest of Sacramento.

Chief Kavanaugh, a unified incident commander on the Mendocino Complex Fire, confirmed the fatality in a press conference Monday night.

"Fact finding on the accident" is underway, officials said. "We will be posting more information as it comes available".

The Mendocino Complex - actually twin fires being fought together - has burned for more than two weeks. Crews have been able to cut containment lines around 68 percent of the northern California fire, Cal Fire said.

Dry, hot and windy weather has fuelled the fires this season, making them hard to contain.

Another massive blaze, the Carr Fire, has blackened about 207,000 acres and killed eight people in and around Shasta County, north of Sacramento near the OR state line. Brian Hughes was killed on July 29 when he was struck by a falling tree.

Eight civilians have also been killed in the blazes across the state.

Two firefighters were killed last month by the Ferguson, one of three California wildfires that have proven fatal this season.

Investigators are still determining the cause of the firefighter's death and the identity of the firefighter has not been released.

In Southern California the Holy Fire, which authorities say was set on 6 August by a disgruntled homeowner in an Orange County canyon, was 59% contained after torching more than 22,000 acres and destroying a dozen cabins.

This year has been the deadliest for firefighters since 2008, according to SF Gate.
