Weed-killing poison found in breakfast cereals, other foods

  • Cereal killers Monsanto weedkiller that can ‘probably’ cause cancer found in children’s breakfasts

A new report might have some parents thinking twice about what they feed their kids for breakfast.

EWG's tests found glyphosate in 43 of 45 samples of products made with conventionally grown oats; more than two-thirds of the samples contained more than what EWG scientists consider protective of children's health, including samples of Cheerios, Nature Valley Granola, Quaker Dinosaur Eggs instant oatmeal, and Barbara's Multigrain Spoonfuls.

Scientists tested 29 products and found that nearly three-quarters of the samples they tested contained higher levels of glyphosate than deemed safe, according to the report. Weed killer in your cereal? "Roundup could cause cancer", Brent Wisner, the lawyer for the California man, Dewayne Johnson, said in a statement obtained by The Guardian.

The United States Food and Drug Administration, which regulates domestic and imported food to make sure it does not exceed levels set by the E.P.A., said that based on 2016 samples, it had not found any violations of E.P.A. standards with glyphosate.

"In this large, prospective cohort study, no association was apparent between glyphosate and any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall", they wrote.

The report looked at granola, instant oats, oat breakfast cereals, snack bars and whole oats products. "Quaker does not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process". And in 31 of those cases, glyphosate levels were above the organization's health benchmark of 160 parts per billion. In December the agency issued a "deeply flawed" analysis, one which relied heavily on industry studies, which claimedthat glyphosate is not harmful for humans.

In Canada, it's considered safe for human exposure at certain levels.

Monsanto Co's Roundup is shown for sale in Encinitas, California on June 26, 2017. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, more than 200 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on crops each year. It can also be used on produce such as spinach and almonds.

Thankfully, organic oats scored better - as one might expect.

Bayer shares registered yet another sharp decrease on Thursday (16 August), dropping as much as 6.5% in Frankfurt to hover near the 76 euros level as investors fear the German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant may face numerous litigations in the U.S. after its controversial merger with Monsanto. However, the amounts of glyphosate found in the food is far below the allowable limits.

Just because a pesticide level is legal in food doesn't mean that level is safe.

"This data was evaluated by Health Canada and no human health concerns were identified", the agency said in its report.

A recent study has found unsafe amounts of glyphosate in granola bars and popular oat cereals.

Yet, Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., and senior science adviser for the EWG, says the bottom line is that glyphosate does not belong in children's food and that recent biomonitoring studies show detectable levels of the ingredient in people's urine, which likely comes from dietary exposure.

But she and the report's author, toxicologist Alexis Temkin, agreed that the chances of getting cancer from eating contaminated oats are low, WebMD pointed out.

"They have an agenda".
