Gulf Coast braces for Tropical Storm Gordon to reach hurricane strength

The National Weather Service says the tropical storm will gather strength as it heads through the Gulf of Mexico and may be at or near hurricane force as it makes landfall Tuesday night along the MS or Alabama coast.

A hurricane warning has been issued for portions of the central U.S. Gulf Coast as Tropical Storm Gordon approaches.

The hurricane center said Hurricane Florence had maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour and was continuing to move toward the northwest at 12 miles per hour. Some intensification is expected before it makes landfall tonight, possibly as a hurricane, in or near South Mississippi.

In New Orleans, Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a voluntary evacuation notice for areas outside of the New Orleans levee system.

Tampa Bay was pelted with bands of rain and occasionally gusty winds from Tropical Storm Gordon on Monday, but Gulf Coast states could be in for worse.

Alert Day Tuesday: numerous thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon with tropical storm conditions expected and hurricane conditions possible tonight. Tropical Storm Warnings still remain in effect for the Louisiana and Florida coastlines.

Red flags flew over Pensacola-area beaches in Florida's Panhandle, where swimming and wading in the Gulf of Mexico was prohibited.

Conditions should improve along the coast during the day Wednesday, while heavy rain expands inland through western MS, northeast Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas.

There was a storm surge warning in effect for Shell Beach to Dauphin Island, and a storm surge watch west of Shell Beach to the mouth of the Mississippi River and east of Dauphin Island to Navarre. Many replies to various National Weather Service accounts or other outlets with their pleas that the storm veer spontaneously away, as the Gulf coast is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

The Atlantic and Pacific oceans bordering the United States are in the midst of hurricane season, where hurricane Lane and Chris have already made landfall.

The storm left many businesses on Florida's Gulf Coast feeling shortchanged by the holiday weekend.

The main weather story across the southeast is Tropical Storm Gordon. Forecasters say little change in strength is expected in coming days and no coastal watches or warnings are in effect.
