  • Movie star Burt Reynolds reportedly dead at 82

For his efforts, the Academy nominated him for a Best Supporting Actor trophy.

Reynolds was Hollywood's former No. 1 box-office draw, who spent five years (1978 to 1982) attracting the world's most audiences to the movie theaters, a feat unmatched since. However, it's the roles that Burt Reynolds turned down during the height of his fame that might be more noteworthy. He could be affable with the media but at times downright hostile.

But Burt didn't let his financial issues hold back his career, going on to star in 47 films after declaring bankruptcy.

Reynolds, who famously turned down the roles of James Bond and Han Solo, never-the-less forged a film career that marked him out as a singular talent.

The film helped establish Reynolds as one of the most marketable stars of the decade.

He solidified his position as a rising film star with 1974 prison football drama The Longest Yard.

Reynolds' notoriety soared through the late 1970s and 1980s, during which time he spearheaded the "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Cannonball Run" movie franchises.

Reynolds also made his mark in Westerns, such as 1959's "Riverboat" and "Gunsmoke" from 1962 until 1965.

Such was his popularity in box office polls during this period that he managed to weather high-profile disasters like the musical At Long Last Love, Lucky Lady and Nickelodeon. "I've seen women do that (before)", but not men. Reynolds also generated attention for financial woes and his struggles with prescription pain medication. He also "backed away" from playing Batman on TV in the '60s. In 1988, he married actress Loni Anderson, but that also ended bitterly in 1993. "It wasn't original. But if you have to steal, steal from the best". Reynolds manager confirmed with The Hollywood Reporter that the actor died at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. He had a promising future with the program, but he suffered a knee injury in the Seminoles' first game of his sophomore season, then later that year suffered another knee injury and lost his spleen as a result of a vehicle accident. He was 82 years old. "Every shot we did, it was like the first time [that shot had ever been done]".
