The nearly 1,000-word opinion piece released Wednesday afternoon described "many senior officials' at high levels of the administration working to "frustrate parts of [President Trump's] agenda and his worst inclinations".

Trump seethed about the piece and framed it as a jab from critics in denial about his successes, while Washington was consumed with speculation about who wrote the opinion piece.

Some Twitter users digitally edited an image of the column to give it a tweaked headline, often making the article appear to come from Star Wars, Star Trek or other fictional characters.

"The crisis of our time is that people in positions of power see a president who shows "a preference for autocrats and dictators" and "anti-democratic impulses", but do not publicly stand against them, and so allow it to continue", tweets Congressman Don Beyer of Virginia.

"While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility", the defence secretary had said.

"And this person instead, according to the New York Times, chose not only to stay but to undermine what President Trump and this administration are trying to do".

The former NY businessman and reality TV star has had an unusually high level of staff turnover and has sometimes publicly criticized his top aides. Unidentified sources have become the majority of voices people hear about in today's news.

The piece in the New York Times describes a president who is "impetuous" saying, "His impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back.like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations". Trump said, "I think it's embarrassing for the country to allow protesters".

"This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration's many successes", Kelly said.

"This is just another example of the liberal media's concerted effort to discredit the President", White House Press Secretary Sanders said.

He did some background checking, verified that the writer was who they purported to be and the paper published, to the immediate fury of Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump called for the Times to disclose the author's identity, calling it a threat to national security.

Even the Washington Post, no defender of the president, called the op-ed old news, and a "PR stunt".

"I was absolutely nervous about it for any number of reasons, one being the safety and security of the writer".

The staffer says that Trump is unpredictable, amoral, and a danger to the health of the USA.

And they were published a day after the release of details from an explosive new book by longtime journalist Bob Woodward that laid bare concerns among the highest echelon of Trump aides about the president's judgment.

Trump was furious, tweeting Thursday morning that "The Deep State and the Left, and their vehicle, the Fake News Media, are going insane - & they don't know what to do". Dao said: "I feel that we followed a definition that has been used by our newsroom in the past".
