What will Apple call this year's iPhones? iPhone 2018? iPhone X (2018)? iPhone X Plus? iPhone XS?

Before we explain what's coming, if you're looking to upgrade from anything from an iPhone 7 or older, you'll have to come to terms with the fact Apple's iconic home button is no more. Rumors have been plentiful about these new iPhones with the LCD base version being the device that has garnered much of the attention. The first is the nomenclature.

Thanks to the official invites sent out by Apple, we know that the new iPhones for 2018 are going to get unveiled on Wednesday, September 12 at the Steve Jobs Theater - a large, round event space housed at Apple's new campus in Cupertino (which is itself round).

As with all things Apple, we'd advise you take all rumours with a pinch of salt because nothing is confirmed until CEO Tim Cook takes to the stage and lets us get a good look at his gadgets. In fact, you should nearly expect it to happen whenever a new iPhone form-factor launches.

One point of contention that has not yet been made clear is whether or not the entry-level iPhone XC will feature a cost-effective LCD screen as an alternative to the cutting edge OLED display found on the iPhone X and its subsequent derivatives higher up on the product chart.

According to current information, the iPhone XC would still cost around $700 and would, therefore, be just as expensive as the iPhone 8. The company will launch new iPhones and an iPad.

The basic iPhone XS is expected to be an update X with a OLED 5.8-inch screen.

According to the latest report, the successor to the iPhone X, which will come with 5.7-inch OLED display, will be called iPhone XS, as also rumoured earlier. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details!

Apple may throw a wrench in its usual iPhone naming scheme by using letters (and Roman numerals) instead of numbers. There are already several leaks about these upcoming Apple devices.

"Apple doesn't have to prove anything, other than that they are willing to segment the market more", he said, while pointing out that the company will likely be "offering a wider array of choices". Usually, Apple comes up with only one availability date for worldwide. It also might include Touch ID, but with no Touch Bar.

Still, Apple has faced tight supply of the new low-priced model due to minor complications fitting backlights for the LCD screen, according to people familiar with the matter.
