The governing body's support for Ramos came after the WTA, which operates the women's tour, was critical of the way things went between him and Williams in NY.

But now the 47-year-old umpire from Portugal is gained worldwide notoriety (or fame, considering the support he has received in some quarters) for his clashes with Serena Williams in the US Open final won by Naomi Osaka.

Tennis umpires reportedly are considering boycotting Serena Williams' matches in the wake of the tennis star's confrontation with chair umpire Carlos Ramos in the U.S. Open final.

Clay Travis heavily refutes Serena's claims and called out the media for openly accepting and promoting extremely delicate and inflammable accusations that immorally stir up the worst parts of our society, especially when baseless in nature. "Umpires are just upset", Ings added. "She's passionate. She was speaking out and I think for Ramos, he was a little defensive at that point, and was fed up as opposed to saying, 'Okay, let's get back to business, '" Adams said.

Williams was assessed three code violations during the the loss to Osaka.

The CEO of USTA, the governing body of tennis in the USA, was asked if she believes female players are held to different standards than men.

The umpire at the centre of the Williams controversy insists he is fine - and says it is not possible to umpire a tennis match "a la carte".

Earlier, WTA chief Steve Simon said Ramos would have responded differently had a men's player reacted in a similar way. When she called chair umpire Carlos Ramos a "thief," demanded an apology and grew emotional as she said she never cheats and wants to set an example for her daughter, he docked her a game at a critical juncture.

"I think just growing up and watching her play and having the opportunity to play during the finals in Arthur Ashe".

There was no "soft warning" from Ramos either for the coaching issue or the final one where he penalised Williams with a game.

Williams later smashed her racquet, resulting in a code violation and a point deduction, which she argued over with Ramos.

"I would rather buy my parents something", she said.

An anonymous official told the newspaper that Ramos was "thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it", and that a number of umpires agreed they were "not supported" by the USTA during what was a particularly controversial US Open.

Since the match, many have spoken about the ways that the racism has affected how Williams has been treated, post-match.
