"This has all the indicators of an 11th-hour character assassination and a desperate attempt to delay and defeat the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh, who has a sterling reputation in his community, his profession, his church and among hundreds of friends, colleagues and co-workers", she said in a statement.

"I have received information from an individual concerning the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court", she said in the statement. "I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities", Ms. Feinstein said in a statement Thursday.

The New York Times spoke with two officials "familiar with the matter" who claimed that the information involves a woman's sexual misconduct allegation against Kavanaugh dating back to his high school years.

On Thursday, Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley told reporters he had not seen the letter firsthand.

In the responses, Kavanaugh declined to give detailed answers on topic after topic, saying either that the issue might come before him as a justice and he didn't want to give a hint, or that he didn't recall all the matters that crossed his desk when working in the White House as a lawyer and staff secretary during the George W. Bush administration.

The White House is accusing Senate Democrats of an unfounded "11th hour attempt to delay" a vote on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. "It's unnecessary and dilatory, especially when many have already made a decision to vote against Judge Kavanaugh", Grassley said in a statement.

The vote occurred as Democrats complained about the confirmation process and pressed for more documents from President Trump's nominee. Despite those commitments, the letter said one member of the committee has released more than 40 documents without consent, referring to Booker.

Attorney Debra Katz is believed to be representing the woman who is the subject of the letter, though she did not confirm that to The Intercept. But, she said, "Not until the eve of his confirmation has Sen". It's unclear whether the sources consulted by the Times and The Intercept have seen the document that Feinstein passed along to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which makes it impossible to gauge the seriousness of the information.

"In that split second, I unfortunately did not realize that the man was the father of a shooting victim from Parkland, Fla.", Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh's nomination was included on the agenda for Thursday's committee meeting, and it was expected the panel's Democratic members would request the nomination be held over for one week. They show Kavanaugh's involvement in judicial nominations, including for some controversial judges.

Senate Republicans accused Booker of grandstanding as a potential 2020 White House candidate. With no sign yet of any Republicans planning to vote against Kavanaugh, he seems poised to win confirmation despite Democratic opposition.
